Oak Flats, Port Kembla and Wests lead way in junior cricket


Following the completion of the preliminary rounds, Oak Flats is the minor premier for the combined Illawarra and South Coast junior cricket under 16A competition. They will play fourth team Balgownie in a semi-final on Saturday and Sunday March 6 and 7 at Shane Lee Oval. The other semi-final will be played between Corrimal (3rd) and Thirroul (2nd) at Hollymount Park.
In the 16B competition Port Kembla took out the minor premiership and take on Wests Illawarra (4th) at Darcy Wentworth Oval, while Kiama (2nd) plays Keira (3rd) at Bonaira ground in Kiama. In the 14A’s, minor premiers Wests Illawarra take on Thirroul (4th) at Figtree 2. Shellharbour who came second play Keira (3rd) in the other semi.  
All semi-finals are over the two days of Saturday and Sunday March 6 and 7 beginning at 8am.

Verma, Maguire and Edwards among high achievers in junior cricket


In an outstanding all round performance, Wests Illawarra’s Rahil Verma has been dominant in both batting and bowling in the 16A competition after the completion of the preliminary rounds of the combined Illawarra and South Coast junior cricket competitions. He came second in the bowling aggregate with 23 wickets from 8 matches at an average of 10.3. In batting he scored 453 runs at an average of 90.6 after two centuries and two fifties.
Just ahead of Verma in the batting aggregates was Balgownie’s Corbin Brown with 504 runs at an average of 45.8 with Hayden McCrae of Helensburgh next with 498 runs at 71.1. Oak Flats’ Ryan Maguire had the astonishing average of 116, having scored 348 runs for only three dismissals in seven innings. In the 16A bowling Rahil Verma was only headed by Oak Flats’ Trent Brownlee who took 3 wickets at an average of 8.73.
In the 16B competition, Keira’s Christopher Moore has topped the batting aggregate with 448 runs at 44.80, followed by Wests’ Dominic Fernandez with 376 runs at 41.78. In the bowling Mark Mura of Kiama clearly took the most wickets with 29 at 7.97., while Port Kembla’s Nicholas Purdevski was next with 22 wickets at an average of 8.00.
In the 14A competition, Tylar Edwards from Wests clearly led the batting aggregate with 679 runs at an amazing average of 135.80. He was followed by Corrimal’s Thomas McDevitt with 379 runs at 47.38 and Wests’ Sam Benson with 372 runs at an average of 93.00. Benson also featured in the bowling top ten with 15 wickets at 13.20. The bowling aggregate was shared by three players who each took 17 wickets. These were Shellharbour’s Jackson Brooks at an average of 10.24, Matthew Scavarelli of Keira at 10.76 and Dapto’s Jake Ramirez at 13.12.

South Coast Wolves begin Premier Youth League Football well


The newly named South Coast Wolves Premier Youth League teams have begun their season well against the strong Bonnyrigg White Eagles Club. The Wolves bagged ten points in the first round winning the 13s by 3 goals to 1, drawing the 14s one all,  winning the 15s by 1 nil  and the 16s by 2 nil. However, the 18s found the Eagles too strong to lose 3 – 1.
The next four rounds for the Wolves are:
Saturday March 6 against Marconi Stallions at Elizabeth Park Bellambi.
Saturday March 13 against Sutherland Sharks at Seymour Shaw, Miranda.
Saturday March 20 against Sydney United at Sydney United Sports Centre.
Saturday March 27 against Bankstown City at Jensen Park.

Follow Wollongong Hawks in NBL grand final series


After their 2 – 1 semi-final series win over the Townsville Crocodiles the Wollongong Hawks take on the Perth Wildcats in the National Basketball League grand final series over the next two weeks.
Game 1 is at Perth on Friday March 5 beginning at 7pm Perth time.
Game 2 is at the WIN Entertainment Centre on Tuesday March 9 beginning at 7.30pm.
If a third game decider is required this will be back at Perth on Friday March 12 at 7pm Perth time.

See Illawarra & South Coast Twenty 20 cricket finals


Illawarra and South Coast senior cricket teams have been playing a Twenty 20 competition through February and March. 16 teams began in four pools of four teams with the pool rounds taking place on Wednesday nights, February 3, 10 and 17. It is now down to the last four teams.
The semis between the winners of each pool take place on March 3 at North Dalton Park as follows:
Keira v University at 5pm
Dapto v Wollongong at 7.40pm
